Kent Smith served Euclid, Ohio, as an award winning Member of the Euclid Board of Education from 2002 – 2013. He is a 4-time winner of the “Award of Achievement” which is awarded annually to less than 3% of all School Board Members in Ohio. He was first elected in 2001 and was re-elected in 2005 and 2009. In his 12 years on the Euclid School Board, Kent never missed a meeting.

In 2006, Kent was elected the head of the Democratic Party in Euclid, a position called City Democratic Leader. He was re-elected City Democratic Leader in 2010 and 2014.

Kent is a Ph.D. candidate in the Economic Development program at Cleveland State University. His Masters Degree thesis – which was written in 2001 – was about the emerging threat of Predatory Lending and the SubPrime Market. He co-authored the first Predatory Lending Report by Policy Matters Ohio in 2002.

On the 4th of July, 2008, his first book, “Please God Save Us” – co-authored with artist Derek Hess – was released. The book met with outstanding critical reviews and has been written up in The Boston Globe, Revolver Magazine and Alternative Press among other publications. Kent and his co-author were featured in the “Best of Cleveland” issue of The Cleveland Scene and were named “Best Lefty Rabble Rousers” for 2009 for their book.

In the 1990’s Kent worked as paid Democratic Party campaign staff in 6 states – all of them cold. But he used those skills to help build the Euclid Democratic Party into a well known collection of activists. In 2006, Kent Smith became the local head of the Democratic Party, a position called the Euclid City Democratic Leader. He was unanimously re-elected to that position in 2010.

Professionally, Kent has worked for the Cuyahoga County Prosecutors Office and for four Northeast Ohio non-profits.

Kent won the Democratic Party Primary on May 6, 2014. He is the Democratic Party nominee for the 8th Ohio House District.
